Robert Larios, MBA '14
Robert Larios, President & CEO of the Los Angeles City Employees Association, Inc. and it’s subsidiary Employees Club of California
Robert Larios is a testament to the potential of the American dream, weaving a compelling narrative from his beginnings as a Mexican immigrant to becoming an influential American CEO. Born to courageous parents, Rafael and Carmen, who left their homeland and all their possessions behind, Robert's life embodies the relentless pursuit of opportunity and prosperity. His father's remarkable journey from farm worker to farm owner serves as a beacon of hope and determination, instilling in Robert the values of hard work and ambition.
Growing up in Pauma Valley, California, an intimate avocado and citrus farming community nestled in San Diego County, Robert witnessed the population grow from under 1,000 in the 1970s to about 3,000 in the 1980s. This vibrant farming community was filled with migrant workers like his parents, who were integral to cultivating the rich orchards that defined the area. Robert spent his summers laboring alongside these workers in the citrus orchards, a formative experience that underscored the importance of understanding one's potential. Guided by his father's lessons and inspired by the wisdom of Fred Rogers, who said, 'It’s really easy to fall into the trap of believing that what we do is more important than what we are. Of course, it’s the opposite that’s true: What we are ultimately determines what we do,' Robert has adopted a leadership philosophy centered on empathy, personal growth, and the intrinsic value of individuals.
In his professional journey, Robert serves as the President and CEO of the Los Angeles City Employees Association, Inc., and the Employees Club of California. His tenure is marked by a steadfast commitment to honoring and celebrating public service employees throughout the nation. Robert’s vision is expansive, aiming to ensure that every public service worker feels recognized and appreciated for their dedication and contributions.
Educationally, Robert's path has been exemplary. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Literature & Linguistics from the University of Southern California (USC) and an executive MBA from the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business. His academic achievements highlight his belief in the transformative power of education, both as a tool for personal development and as a means to inspire others.
Currently, Robert is writing a book on leadership and life lessons, driven by the desire to share the insights he has gained throughout his journey. He hopes that "The lessons I gained can inspire you to find inner strength, personal growth, and your own definition of happiness and fulfillment, helping you create an extraordinary life from life's challenges." This work not only exemplifies his commitment to sharing knowledge but also cements his status as a thought leader dedicated to inspiring others through his narrative of triumph and resilience.
Robert's life story is one of resilience, positivity, and the pursuit of personal and societal betterment. His contributions to society, particularly through his advocacy for public service employees, underscore his commitment to an inclusive and appreciative community. With unwavering dedication, Robert Larios continues to inspire countless individuals, proving that with courage, empathy, and a vision for the future, the American dream remains within reach for all who dare to pursue it.
