Poets&Quants Honors Michigan Ross’ Sarah Miller as Latest Professor of the Week for Her Work on the Affordable Care Act

Sarah Miller is the latest Ross School of Business faculty member to be showcased in Poets&Quants’ “Professor of the Week” series.

P&Q highlighted Miller’s research into the impact of the Affordable Care Act, particularly a working paper that concluded the ACA’s provisions to expand Medicaid led directly to thousands of lives being saved. P&Q writes that despite the ACA’s high profile,  “data on what the ACA actually achieved has been scant” and calls Miller’s work “important new research.”

In addition to the lives saved by expanding Medicaid, the paper also estimates that an additional 15,600 deaths could have been averted if the expansion had been adopted nationwide. Miller authored the paper in collaboration with Sean Altekruse of the National Institutes of Health, Norman Johnson of the U.S. Census Bureau, and Laura Wherry of UCLA. 

Miller, an assistant professor of business economics and public policy, conducts research on the effects of health care policy, insurance coverage, and related issues. A Ross faculty member since 2014, Miller has taught classes in applied microeconomics, business economics, and health care markets and public policy.

Last year, P&Q honored Uday Rajan as a “Professor of the Week” for his research on cryptocurrencies.
