New Student Orientation and Preparing for the Fall
The start of the fall semester is less than 10 weeks away! That means that we are busy with summer orientation and preparing for the excitement of fall.
New Student Orientation
Orientation for incoming first-year students began earlier this month. This year, orientation is a hybrid experience (both virtual and in-person), with three main components: pre-advising activities and online placement exams, virtual academic advising, and a one-day, on-campus experience.
And for parents like myself who like to keep tabs on things, the university also offers a parent and family orientation on the same day as the student’s on-campus experience. You can register up to two guests for this event. To register, please use the instructions provided in your orientation invitation email, which was sent in late April. More information on orientation can be found on the Orientation Overview provided by the Office of New Student Programs.
Preparing for the Fall
While attending orientation, you’ll learn that there are a few more things to do to prepare for fall. But most important is that you continue to check your university email account on a regular basis! And regular means daily. All important next steps come to your @umich.edu email and these requests often have a quick turnaround on response time if there is an action you need to do.
Housing
You’ll want to make sure that you have submitted your housing application. Starting in June and continuing into August, students will receive housing contracts that will be sent to their University email account. The day you receive your contract has no bearing on where you will live (University Housing tells us there are a variety of room types and locations available all the way through the assignment process). Remember you must submit your contract within three business days of receiving it.
Transfer and Test Credits
While Ross academic advisors will answer your questions on transfer credit and how it matches to the BBA program requirements during orientation, it is good to review the online resources mentioned below to understand how credits transfer to U-M. The university’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions will process your AP/IB/Dual Enrollment credit. Their webpage lists exactly how your AP/IB test score will transfer as credit to U-M. The scores must be received directly from the testing agency. For dual enrollment credit (college courses you may have taken at another college or online), please use the Transfer Equivalency Search. Michigan Ross aligns with the College of Literature, Sciences, and the Arts transfer credit equivalencies. When using this search guide, you will see that some courses will transfer as the exact course at U-M, while some courses will transfer as departmental credit (denoted by an X after the course number). Note that we do not accept business course credit.
I hope this provides enough of the important information to get you started on your transition to U-M and the fall semester. The academic advising team within the Office of Undergraduate Programs will continue to be a great resource this summer and beyond. If you have questions related to your transition, please contact the advising team at [email protected]
